Requirements for you:
A tuned, working piano that is accessible daily. A keyboard is acceptable for first-second year beginners. The keyboard must be full size with weighted keys. It must have a working sustaining pedal, internal speakers, a stand for music, a chair or bench of appropriate height and not be located in a bedroom. Any level above intermediate will require an actual acoustical instrument for practice and lessons.
Ages of students:
Preschoolers – I will teach children as young as 4 years of age. They need to be able to do the following:
- know their alphabet and be able to recognize letters
- count to 12
- know their right and left hands
School-aged children – Kindergarten through 12th grade.
Adults of any age
Levels:
Elementary – 0-2 years of piano instruction, and/or are completing the first two levels within a piano course
Intermediate – 3-5 years of piano lesson, and/or are completing the 3rd-5th levels within a piano course
Advanced - 6+ years of piano, and/or are completing the 6th level with a piano course
Teaching curriculum:
My main teaching series is the Alfred Basic Piano Course. If you are not a beginner, I am willing to work with the series you are currently using so you can finish up those books before purchasing new ones. Each book in the Alfred Basic Piano Course costs around $12. You will be purchasing 4-5 books per level, and each level lasts about a school year for the average student. You will be responsible to purchase all materials needed.
Piano theory is an essential part of my teaching. Technique is also important, as is scale practice and Hanon in the intermediate levels.
Assignment books that record practice times will be used to encourage daily practice.
Cost:
The cost will be $30-35 for a 30 minute lesson (elementary), $40-45 for a 30-45 minute lesson (intermediate, advanced up through middle school), $50 for a 60 minute lesson (advanced - high school and older). Lessons will happen once a week (adult lessons are biweekly). Payment for the month will be made in advance at the first lesson of each month.
Payment can be made by cash or personal check made out to me as well as Venmo and Zelle. If a check bounces, you will be charged the fee that the bank charges me. I will notify you as soon as this happens and the amount of the check plus the fee will be required in cash at the next lesson. If a check from you bounces more than once, your payment will need to be by cash only.
As of Jan 1, 2015, I will no longer be giving future credit for lessons canceled, except for special circumstances. I will do my best to make-up the canceled lesson within that week. If I am unable to reschedule, I have set up weeks in June for make-up lessons. If you have to cancel more than 4 times, and I am unable to reschedule your lessons, there will be no credit for the canceled lesson(s).
Refunds will only be given if lessons will not be continued.
Location:
I do not teach from my home. I am only traveling to students' homes for an extra $10 per family per week.
There are some guidelines that need to be followed in order for this to work.
- The piano must be tuned and in working order.
- Other people or children in the home must be quiet during the lesson time.
- Other people or children will not be allowed in the room where the lesson is taking place. Occasionally, a special “performance” for a family member or friend can be done when the lesson has been completed.
- I will not give a lesson to anyone under 18 without an adult in the home.
- Since I will be driving significant distances, I must know if you are canceling the lesson by 8am if you have a morning lesson, and by 11am if you have an afternoon lesson.
- If I come to your home for a lesson, and you are not home and have not notified me, you will be charged for the lesson(s) plus the $10 transportation.
